Small to Medium Enterprises (SME's )

Strategic Planning

Background
A technology based start up company needed to obtain funding from independent investors and government grants, to grow its water buffalo embryo business.

Outcome
This company and its subsidiary now has a documented growth path. It has received three grants from government agencies (totalling $140,000) with three more in the pipeline (totalling in excess of $650,000).
The strategic plan was prepared as a multi-purpose document in a manner that will allow easy adaptation into an Information Memorandum for targeted investor purposes when required.

Strategy, Business Development and Global Market Development

Background
Racewell are manufacturers of technology driven stock animal handling systems. As a result of the increasing importance of animal ID and the capture of associated performance data, Racewell have transformed into a “stock management systems” provider.

Outcome
Phae assisted Racewell to establish strategies and business development plans that have increased their revenues by 400% and substantially strengthened their balance sheet. Considerable assistance has been received from agencies such as NZTE and FRST. Currently Racewell is undertaking an export development program which will see them as a global leader in their field.

Cluster Development

Feasibility Studies

Background
Phae have been commissioned to carry out two recent feasibility studies on industry specific clusters.

Outcome
Following our recommendations, one of these groups: a small number of food manufacturers, has moved straight into a Collaborative Business Alliance. They have also made significant gains into a number of export markets in South East Asia and the Middle East.
The second, a group of engineering companies, is in the process of setting up a specialist engineering cluster that will develop its own set of standards and unique products.

New Zealand Trade and Enterprise

Background
Funded by New Zealand Trade and Enterprise and Absolutely Business Wellington, we were commissioned to develop a generic framework for the collaborative commercialisation of product innovations, market opportunities and venture development.

Outcome
The output is a Collaboration Framework and underpinning Commercialisation Toolbox.
NZTE have commissioned Phae to utilise the tool in the internationalisation of a high growth client company.

Tertiary education sector

Background
Phae directed a scoping study into the establishment of an organisation concerned with the collaborative production and delivery of e-education.

Outcome
The establishment of e-Learnz Inc, a consortium of three Universities and seven Polytechnics, including participation from the private sector. Phae was then funded by the Ministry of Education and the Tertiary Education Commission to develop a good practice collaboration and development framework. This was underpinned by a suite of collaborative processes and work tools, supported by a legal framework. The tool set was delivered in June 2005.

Public Sector : Economic Development Agencies

Central Waikato – Economic Development Strategy

Background
We prepared the economic development strategy for Hamilton City and the Central Waikato District. We were instrumental in setting up the economic development agency Business 2 Hamilton (B2H), now named Katolyst. We secured the first two years funding and co-opted regional leaders in science, academia and business onto its establishment board.
This process involved the following key activities:

The key focus of this strategy is Life Sciences and the development of Agri-biotechnology incubator and technology park (Innovation Park on Ruakura campus). A similar process was used for the Otorohanga/Te Kuiti District economic development strategy.

Northland

We are engaged by Enterprise Northland to develop programs and facilitate the development of strategies for regional clusters. Programmes for two clusters comprised reviews of background research, current initiatives and the preparation of strategies and implementation plans.

In both cases, the strategies were prepared following workshops facilitated by us.
